Friday Reads – Finding Family at the Cornish Cove

I’m delighted to feature the gorgeously uplifting romance Finding Family at the Cornish Cove by the fabulous Kim Nash. Grab a cuppa and get cosy, then we’ll find out more about the book and get chatting to Kim. 😊

Family is everything…

For years, Gemma has been running her late mother’s café with devotion, and when an opportunity comes to buy out her next-door neighbour and expand, she jumps at the chance.

She knows she will do her mother proud – keep her legacy going strong – but deep down she knows there’s still something missing.

But sometimes family are those you choose, or those who choose you! With a growing community of supporters cheering Gemma on, will she really spend the rest of her life alone?

And with some new faces at her blossoming bistro, perhaps romance may also be on the cards?

Your book sounds fabulous Kim, it’s on my tbr and I can’t wait to read it. I loved all your others. Can you tell us a bit about your writing life, which I know you have to squeeze in around being Digital Publicity Manager at Bookouture?

Since I became a writer, it’s taken me a while to find my perfect writing life.  I’ve sat and planned my writing time to the minute, at other times when I’ve got some spare moments, I’ve sat in a café or the car and written while my son was playing football.  I’ve had writing weekends away both alone and with writing friends.  I’ve set myself targets; sometimes I smash them, sometimes I just sit and stare at my screen.  Convincing myself that I can’t write unless I have a gorgeous view, I’ve spent time procrastinating that I need to buy a caravan to use as an office, then procrastinated about where I’m going to site it (don’t laugh but I even measured my drive!).  Then on the same day I did that, after my fabulous writing friend Beth Rain (check out her books they’re fab!) challenged me to a day of 20 minute writing sprints, I wrote 5616 words while facing my dining room wall.

I’ve researched (I call it research, others call it fannying about!) other authors on social media to see what they do.  Some write for set hours a day, some set a daily word target.  There are those night owls who write long into the night, waking bleary eyed after just a couple of hours sleep.  There are the early birds, who are up with the dawn chorus getting those words done and out of the way first thing. Some write in their lunch hours at work and others on the commute.  Some play music, some write in silence. I was getting confused.  What was the magic formula?

I work full time so writing for me is outside of that.  Sometimes I get outrageously jealous that some can go out for a plot walk or a long lunch with friends when they get stuck.  Some writers have a gentle morning routine before they sit at their desks and write around mid-morning.  I cram in some time before work, or at the other end of the day when I’m knackered from trying to be in a creative job all day and then be imaginative with my own books.

So what was their secret? What was I doing wrong?

And then the penny dropped.

THERE IS NO RIGHT WAY.  THERE IS NO WRONG WAY.  WHAT THERE IS, IS YOUR WAY!

My advice would be to do what you can, when you can.

With the best will in the world, you can take advice from others, but you can’t copy them exactly because everyone’s life and demands are different.  We have no idea what goes on in anyone else’s life.  So I would encourage you to experiment. Do what works for you and your life.  I’ve honestly wasted so much time over the years, that I’m sure I could probably have squeezed in another book somewhere (don’t tell my editor I said that though!)

Good luck my writer friends.  YOU’VE GOT THIS!

You’re so right Kim, we all work differently and have to go with what’s right for us. Thanks for dropping by today and talking to us. Wishing you lots more writing success.
