Will this be a Christmas to remember?

Christmas should be the most wonderful time of year. But for Erin, who’s just lost the job that she loves, it’s anything but. Down on her luck, the only gift she wants is escape…

So, Erin returns to Lake Como, home to the pensione she inherited from the grandmother she never met. The city sparkles with the magic of the season, and the guests provide a welcome distraction from the life that Erin has left behind.

As the snow begins to fall, Erin finds herself staying in the room next door to Caleb, an injured footballer who’s eager to avoid the prying eyes of the press. With emotional baggage bigger than his suitcases, he’s a complication that her bruised heart doesn’t need. But when Caleb lights Erin up like Como’s illuminations, will she admit that all she wants for Christmas is him?

Cosy up with Secrets of a Winter Escape, the feel-good novel filled with Christmas magic.

Sue is one of my favourite authors so I was delighted to read an early copy of this book.

My review

Sue has excelled herself in this gorgeous gem of a read. I’ve read and loved the previous book of the three half-sisters who had never met until they were left an equal share in an Italian Pensione in Lake Como by their late grandmother, so couldn’t wait to read Erin’s story. And what a treat it was. I loved feisty, clever, brave Erin and kind-hearted, determined but grouchy Caleb, both dealing with big problems and both clearly very attracted to each other. All the characters are a joy to read about, the setting is described so vividly it immerses you in the story as if you’re actually there and both Caleb’s and Erin’s occupations are expertly researched. A heartwarming festive read about love, second chances and new beginnings skilfully written, highlighting why Sue is a Sunday Times Bestseller.

Welcome back to my blog, Sue and congratulations on your new Christmas release. Do you have any favourite family Christmas traditions? If so, what are they?

Sometime between Christmas and New Year there’s a gathering of the Moorcroft clan. We used to host in someone’s home but that’s a lot of work for up to twenty people, so now we meet in a pub for lunch. Family members often come from other parts of the country and we all chat like mad for a few hours, and presents are given, then those with long journeys go home again while the more local of us often go to someone’s house to carry on. It’s relaxed and lovely. I feel great afterwards.

That sounds lovely, Sue. What would be your perfect Christmas?

One I have in the back of my mind for ‘some day’ is that I’d love to go somewhere warm for Christmas – maybe Malta? – and just be looked after. In reality, I like a fairly quiet Christmas, strung out over the Christmas/NY week: a cuppa with friends on Christmas Eve, then Christmas Day and Boxing Day with close family, the above-mentioned Moorcroft gathering, more cuppas with friends, and maybe a day-trip to the coast if it’s sunny. Of course, like many people, I’d love to have back the loved ones I’ve lost.

Christmas is the time we feel the love of the ones we’ve lost more strongly, I think. If  you could invite any author living or dead to share your Christmas lunch, who would it be?

An author who I’ve found relatively recently and whose books I’m now devouring – Abby Jiminez. She’s wise and witty, as well as a great storyteller, so I think she’d be great company.

That sounds perfect, Sue. What book would you like to find in your Christmas stocking?

As I’m usually lucky enough to be able to buy the books I want, I’ll go large: I’d like someone to package the works of Nevil Shute in hardbacks with sprayed edges and foil titles. I’d clear shelf space for them. I have all his books in paperback – very old editions! – so to get special editions would be amazing.

Oh goodness, that sounds fab! I love books with sprayed edges and foil titles. Ive been promising to treat myself to one.
