I’m delighted to welcome talented author Suzie Tullett, who was nominated for the Guardian’s Not the Booker Prize, to my blog today. Suzie is going to talk to us about her writing journey and her latest book, so grab yourself a cuppa, get cosy and let’s get talking to Suzie.

Author bio:

Suzie Tullett is an author of contemporary humorous fiction and romantic comedy. Her novels include Going Underground, Little White Lies and Butterflies, which was short-listed for The Guardian’s Not the Booker Prize, and The Trouble with Words. She has a Masters Degree in Television & Radio Scriptwriting and worked as a scriptwriter before becoming a full-time novelist.

Lucky enough to live between the UK and France with her husband and two little rescue dogs, when Suzie isn’t creating her own literary masterpieces, she usually has her head in someone else’s.

Welcome to my blog, Suzie. Could you tell us about your writing journey?

Thanks for hosting me today, Karen. To feature alongside such fantastic writers feels like an honour.

It’s a pleasure, Suzie.☺️

My writing journey began when I was in my late twenties. I’d gone to university as a mature student and after finishing my BA realised I wasn’t done with studying. Despite having no experience, I applied to do an MA in Television & Radio Scriptwriting and no-one was as surprised as me when I was accepted.

As well as giving me the skills and knowledge needed to tell great stories, there were mentoring opportunities which in a moment of madness, saw me emailing Paul Abbott because if you don’t ask, you don’t get. Expecting him to be far too busy to get back to little old me, I can still feel the nervous excitement when my phone rang and it was actually the man himself on the end of the line!

Sadly, I was right about Paul’s schedule but he didn’t dismiss me altogether. He asked if I minded working with Daniel Brocklehurst instead. Award winning in his own right, naturally I jumped at the chance.

Oh wow! What a fantastic opportunity!

Thanks to part cheek and a lot of luck, that’s when my writing career began in earnest. I was accepted onto the BBC’s New Writers Scheme, got an agent, and set about being a full time scriptwriter.

Of course, in any good journey there are twists and turns and when I decided to try and write a book, I quickly learned that this was where my heart lay.

With books, I didn’t have to think about directors and actors, and more importantly budgets. I could tell my stories in exotic locations and have as many helicopter crashes as I wanted. Cost no longer mattered. Not that I’ve ever written about a helicopter crash. But it’s good to know I can if I want to.

Which brings me to where I am now.

Writing fun character-led stories that make readers laugh and sometimes cry, alongside a great publisher, who’s about to release my tenth novel – book one in my very first series – eek!

That’s a fantastic writing journey, Suzie. Congratulations on your new series. Wishing you much success.
