My guest today is John Nicholl, author of psychological thrillers. John has dropped by to tell us about his road to publication, and his latest book. So grab yourself a cuppa, get cosy and let’s get talking to John.

John Nicholl is a Welsh author renowned for his gripping psychological thrillers and crime novels. Born and raised in West Wales, Nicholl draws upon his experiences as a former police officer, child protection social worker, and lecturer to craft compelling narratives that delve into the darkest corners of human nature. His work often explores themes of justice, psychological manipulation, and the resilience of the human spirit.

In addition to his novels, Nicholl is an advocate for raising awareness about abuse and mental health issues, using his platform to address societal challenges. When not writing, he enjoys the tranquil surroundings of West Wales, where he continues to draw inspiration for his work.

Welcome to my blog, John. Can you tell us about your writing journey?

Thanks for inviting me over, Karen. I’m an author of psychological thrillers—a path that has been shaped by my life’s experiences and passions. Before I ever put pen to paper, I spent over 20 years working in public service, which deeply influenced my storytelling and the themes I explore in my books.

I was born and raised in Wales, a place whose rugged beauty and rich culture have been a constant source of inspiration. Growing up, I was always drawn to the complexities of human behaviour, which eventually led me to pursue a career in law enforcement. I served as a police officer which gave me a firsthand understanding of the darker sides of human nature. It also instilled in me a profound respect for the resilience of those who’ve endured trauma.

After leaving the police force, I continued my commitment to justice by working as a child protection social worker and a trainer for those who work with vulnerable populations. This chapter of my life was as challenging as it was rewarding. It allowed me to see the world through the eyes of those who have been marginalized or victimized, and it deepened my understanding of the human spirit’s capacity for both cruelty and compassion.

Writing was something I’d always been passionate about, but it wasn’t until later in life that I decided to turn my hand to fiction. I wanted to create stories that not only entertained but also shed light on the psychological impact of crime and trauma. My first novel, The Doctor, was born from this desire. It’s a dark and gritty thriller that delves into the mind of a manipulative predator and explores the devastating ripple effects of his actions. Writing that book was both cathartic and challenging—it allowed me to channel years of professional experience into a gripping narrative.

Since then, I’ve authored fifteen more psychological thrillers, each exploring different facets of the human psyche and the complexities of morality. I aim to create characters that feel real and stories that linger with readers long after they’ve turned the last page. Many of my books are set in Wales, and I take pride in weaving the country’s landscapes and atmosphere into my storytelling.

When I’m not writing, I enjoy spending time with my family, exploring the beautiful Welsh countryside, and indulging in a good book. I’m a firm believer in lifelong learning, and I continue to draw inspiration from the world around me, whether it’s through travel, reading, or connecting with my readers.

Looking back, I’m grateful for the journey that brought me here—from a career in public service to a life spent crafting stories that resonate with people around the world. Writing has given me a new way to make sense of the complexities of human behaviour, and I’m honoured to share my stories with you.

My next book, The Boyfriend, is available to pre-order now, and will be published by the brilliant Boldwood Books on 4 April this year.

Thanks so much for sharing your amazing writing journey with us, John.

John’s latest book:

When Anna first meets Mark, she thinks he’s the perfect boyfriend. Wealthy and charming, he showers her with gifts, compliments, everything she has ever desired.

But Mark is less a prince than a man with a dangerous secret, and as their love life becomes ever darker, Anna flees him.

There is nowhere safe from him, though. Not for Anna. Nor for the girlfriends who follow her.

Because this is a boyfriend who would kill to make sure he can continue to kiss sleeping princesses…

Some of John’s other books:

She’s on trial for murder… Now it’s her turn to tell her story…

The truth is that I loved James with my whole heart. We were soulmates: meant to be together forever. I had just found out I was carrying his child.

But it’s time to tell my side of the story. It’s time everyone knew what happened on our wedding day, on our honeymoon, and on that fateful last drive together. It’s time everyone found out about the secrets and about the threat that loomed over our marriage. It’s time everyone found out who really killed James.

And I need everyone to believe me. To believe I’m not a killer. Because if they don’t, then my baby won’t just have no father… she’ll have no mother.

It was meant to be the perfect getaway…

As I board the plane, all I can feel is hope and excitement. One whole week away. Just me and the man I have promised to be with forever.

Time to repair what has been broken. Maybe even try for another baby, and pray that this time it doesn’t end heartbreakingly.

I just need to not think about what George has done. He’s my husband. And this is the holiday where we make things right.

But then I realise he can’t take his eyes off the beautiful woman who’s just boarded the plane in front of me…

In that moment, everything changes.

And nobody is safe.
